New projects
I haven't blogged for a while, but I have been busy. Inspired by all the lovely things that Morty posts on her blog, and by Alistair's tractor mending exploits, I thought it was about time I shared some of what I've been up to.
First, not yet finished but nearly there, a crocheted blanket for my cousin's soon-to-be-born daughter. It is currently 50cm by 75cm or thereabouts (a little under 20 by 30 inches in old money).

Secondly, I got a sewing machine in November. It's been sitting in the spare room since then, and I've played with it occasionally, but today it was finally light enough and warm enough to sit in there for a bit, so having mended everything on the mending pile, I had a go at making a cushion cover from an offcut of material I bought a while ago:

It's very simple and not perfect but I'm really pleased with it as my first "project" on the new machine, and I'll be making another one as soon as I have half an hour to spare.
Finally, I've started another blog to post about maths and education related topics - if you'd be interested in reading it, let me know and I'll send you the link.

Well, I'm very impressed.
Both projects seem to have turned out very well. Good for you!
That blanket is so pretty. I've never learned to crochet. I wonder if it's too late for an old lady to learn.
Yes please, I'd love to read your other mathsy blog!
I know I've said this already, but WOOHOO! It all looks fantastic :D
And Trouty, it is never too late to learn! My Mum has recently come to find the joys of embroidery. Of course I have exploited this ruthlessly and gotten her help on a bunch of unfinished projects, but that isn't the point :)
TROUTY SAYS:
Rebecca, I doubt very much whether your mum is as old as I am but I take your point and will look out for a book entitled 'Crocheting for Idiots'.
Nice work.
I'd look at your maths blog if you'd let me.
Nice work! And I'd like a dekko at the maths blog, please, as long as it won't make my brain hurt.
Paul, Lois, Hutters - you should have an email with a linky to my maths blog, assuming I have your email addresses correct. If not, drop me an email: counts underscore sheep at hotmail dot com.
Trouty, I echo what Becky said - it's NEVER too late. There are loads of videos online that show basic crocheting techniques, I taught myself from watching those (and pausing and rewinding lots and lots of times until I figured it out).

Fluffy, I took your advice and watched a couple of crocheting clips on Youtube.
Then I dug out an old crochet hook and some yarn and now I'm hooked!
Thank you very much. Shame I didn't cotton on months ago. I might have wiled away the long, cold winter nights more profitably.
You CAN teach old ladies new tricks!!
Oh Trouty I'm so pleased! It's such a lovely way to while away the time and you can make such pretty things so easily - the more people I can convert to crocheting the better. Well done!
