Football, real and fantasy
I managed to miss most of the England game this evening, through tiredness and being on the phone, but I did catch the winning goal from Frank Lampard to take us to the top of the group. This got me thinking about my fantasy football team, which must be registered by Saturday if I wish to score any points in week one (yes, I know the premiership season started yonks ago, but the Schools Fantasy League starts late). I will be away this weekend so am likely to forget if I leave it until Friday night as I have done in previous years, so I set to tonight to put together a bunch of players.
My first problem was picking a team name. There is a league table pinned up right outside my classroom every week, so anyone waiting to come into my lesson can see where I am; I will take enough stick about being bottom of the league without people taking the wotsit out of my team name too. Eventually I found something reasonably innocuous and then picked my team.
In previous years I have deliberately picked cheap players for most of the team and then filled in with a couple of pricey points scorers. This time round I picked my dream team for most of the positions, and then filled in with people I'd heard of or who had been recommended for the rest, and managed to finish exactly on budget. I've gambled that Thierry Henry will be back sooner rather than later, and put him in, and I picked Frank Lampard because he was fresh in my mind after tonight's game. Maybe not the best ways to pick a team, but I'm hoping not to finish quite so close to the bottom this year... watch this space!
