On top of the world

Long-time readers of my exploits may remember that back in January '06, while everyone else was meeting up in Oxford for fun and frolics, I was in a far finer University city, receiving my MA which I worked so very hard for. Well one of the privileges afforded to alumni of Trinity College, Cambridge, once they have received their MA, is the right to dine at High Table free of charge, several (possibly 4) times a year. As Sam was off on his travels this weekend and I was going to be on my own, I arranged with some college chums that we should exercise our rights, and thus I toddled off to Cambridge on Saturday morning.

The lovely Tom and Andy cooked me a wonderful lunch of steak sandwiches and then we wandered into town so I could buy shiny shoes. Then I availed myself of their bathroom mirror to put on lots of makeup, and put on my posh frock, and we proceeded to Trinity for our free dinner.

Alas, there was a function in hall, so dinner was served instead in the Combination Room. Our good friend John is now a Fellow though, so he looked after us properly. The meal was ok - the main course was crab, which I pushed around on the plate a bit, but the dessert, creme brulee, was excellent. After dinner, all the other Fellows mongoosed off, leaving John to entertain us. After the port had done two rounds and we'd eaten sufficient cheese (and after Andy had experimented with the snuff) Tom badgered John to use his Fellow Powers to borrow the key to go up on the roof of the library. As an undergrad, everyone knew that climbing on the roof was a surefire way to be Sent Down, so it's nice to have friends with sufficient authority to legitimately get one of the best views over college. I shall have to go back when I'm appropriately dressed for climbing up ladders, in order to go onto the other roof.

After some sitting and chatting in John's lovely room, Tom, Andy and I got a taxi back to their flat, and after some more putting the world to rights we went to bed. This morning, the ever hospitable chaps cooked me the most fantastic breakfast which I didn't even manage to finish, and then they put me back on a train to Essex to recover from the weekend's excesses and prepare myself for another busy week at work.
